Beyond the Smart Meter: An Architecture for Scalable AMI and Grid Intelligence in Latin America<\/strong><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Smart metering was justified by billing and loss reduction \u2014 but distributed generation, electrification and cybersecurity now tempt utilities to ask the meter to become everything at once. That instinct quietly breaks at scale. This paper argues each function must sit where the utility can measure, govern, update, recover and accept it safely \u2014 and that more data never becomes grid intelligence until it is qualified, put in electrical context, connected to a governed decision, and checked against the physical outcome. Most utility OT is watched from a SOC that sees packets but not physics, and mistakes detection for assurance. This investigation paper argues that real assurance means correlating cyber, network and physical evidence while preserving the operational authority that keeps protection and control safe. It reframes the attack surface as a dependency graph \u2014 the reachability paths from an enterprise login to a physical grid event \u2014 and shows why discovery is evidence, not authority: knowing an asset exists is not the right to act on it.
